B&M's Transportation installed all new traffic signals along SR-8 in the City of Butler—part of a $2.2 million improvement project for PennDOT.
Work began in January of 2022. By the time the team finished in November of the same year, we installed new poles, signals, cabinets, equipment and underground infrastructure at eight intersections and performed upgrades at a ninth intersection.
"This project was challenging because 75% of the work will be performed at night," said Project Manager Ken B. "There is a great deal of pedestrian and vehicular traffic along this road."
The signals replace a system that is approximately 30 years old. The new system uses radar to detect vehicles as they approach an intersection. The system also includes a preemption system for emergency vehicles. Once the system is installed, drivers should experience improved traffic flow and timing as they move through the city.
The work requires extra care due to the number of underground utilities involved.
"Butler is an old city [established in 1803], so there are numerous old and abandoned utilities which created many challenges for our team."
